"I feel very matched, it's larger than life," said the 67-year-old designer, resplendent in her trademark pink hair and panda eye makeup as she leafed through designs for an English National Opera (ENO) production she revelled in designing.

Under-stated is never a word you would use to describe Rhodes, whose jewelled safety pins were a hallmark of the punk era.

Her eclectic bunch of celebrity clients have ranged from Princess Diana to Queen frontman Freddie Mercury and T-Rex singer Marc Bolan, who were attracted to the vibrant, look-at-me colours that became her trademark.

Back in the 1980s Italian director Franco Zeffirelli telephoned Rhodes to ask if she would be interested in designing for an opera "but he never rang me back."

Aida marks her British debut after having designed "The Magic Flute" and "The Pearl Fishers" for San Diego Opera.
